The Design And Characteristics Of Wine Glasses

Wine is certainly one of the most important and the most popular drinks in the world. This beverage has become an important part of our culture and society. Wine is an essential component in many of our ceremonies, celebrations, events, and religious or cultural rituals.

Wine has been around in the world dating back eight thousand years ago. Historians and wine enthusiasts believe that the drink originated in Iran. From there, it was then bought to Europe six thousand five hundred years ago in present-day Bulgaria. Immigrants from Bulgaria settled in other countries, thus spreading the popularity of the drink. Wine was also very well known in Greece and Rome.

Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of grape juice. Grape juice has a chemical balance that allows fermentation without adding sugars, enzymes, and other nutrients. There are other fruits such as apples and berries and certain grains such as rice that can also be fermented to produce wine. However, grape remains the main source of most of today's wines.

Wine is considered to be an elegant drink. Therefore, it is only fitting to pour the drink in an elegant vessel, not just in an ordinary glass, cup, or mug. That's why wine glasses are made.

A wine glass is a kind of glass stemware that is used to drink and taste wines (Stemware usually refers to a kind of glass that stands on a stem above a base). Typically, a wine glass is composed of the bowl where the drink is poured, the stem, and its foot, or base. For the wine enthusiasts, the selection of a particular wine glass for a particular kind of wine is important since the glass shape can affect its perception.

For wine enthusiasts, the proper use of the wine glass is important especially the most often neglected part,
the stem. To drink from a wine glass, the person should grasp the ware by its stem. The wine glass should be held this way so that the temperature of the wine will not be affected by the person's body temperature (through the hand) when holding the glass. It is more difficult to control the temperature of the wine if the glass is held by the bowl since the temperature flows into the wine easily.

Wine glasses are made out of a variety of materials from glass to lead crystal. A wine glass that is made of fused or cut glass affects the wine's flavor. It creates a rough, thick lip from which is not that pleasurable to drink. A wine glass made out of blown glass, on the other hand, is better. It has a thinner lip which makes drinking from it more comfortable. Wine glasses made out of blown glass are used and preferred by casual wine drinkers.

However, for the true wine enthusiast, lead crystal wine glasses are preferred. A wine glass made of lead crystal is truly a high quality glass. Technically, this kind of wine glass is not made of crystal; the name just stems through convention.

Lead crystal glasses are beautiful and have a high index of refraction. That means they change the effect of the light passing through them. These glasses, however, contains lead which can result in lead poisoning. Nevertheless, using lead in the crystal matrix has advantages in the materials workability in manufacturing. All wine glasses are not colored or frosted since this would hinder the appreciation of the wine's natural color.

The shape of the wine glass is also important; it concentrates the flavor and the aroma of the wine. Additionally, the shape also directs the wine into the best area of the mouth. Since wines have different flavors and have different ¡°best areas in the mouth, different wine glasses for each kind of wine exist.

So if you want to fully enjoy wine, drink it from a wine glass.
